Make your home winter ready

Prepping your home for winter can seem like a daunting task and an annoying chore. But the financial benefits outweighs the cost of not preparing for the long winter season.

First and foremost, don't do it all at once.  Plan ahead!  Plan to do 1 job at a time over the next few weekends.  Each task can be tackled in a few hours or less.  Grab a cup of coffee next Saturday morning and tackle that job first thing! Your wallet will thank you.

Here are the 3 things to do before the Indiana winter hits:

#1:  Plumbing
Start outside.  Drain the water from your faucets and garden hoses and store them in your garage to protect them from the elements.  And if you have an irrigation system, plan to have the pipes bown out.  On the inside of your home, identify any pipes that are could be prone to freezing.  Most of the time, these are your bathroom pipes and kitchen sink pipes.  Identify these and let your family know so when there is freezing weather, you can open the cabinet doors & slowly drip the water to prevent freezing.  And if the worse happens, ensure everyone knows where and how to turn off the water at the source to minimize leaking when and if a pipe bursts.

#2:  Heating
Ensure your fireplace is ready to provide warmth during those cold winter nights.  If you need to, have your chimney inspected and cleaned before the first frost.  At the same time, call a professional to performe a routine check on your furnace.  They will vacuum the vents and change the furnace filter.

#3:  Windows & Doors
Stop the winter air from entering your home!  Consider adding or replacing weather stripping around the doors and windows and caulk any gaps.
